Learning life-long lessons...

Last year, young riders came out for a fun filled Bike Pal Safety Rodeo including great lessons offered by the Palatine Park District staff, Palatine Bike Police and Bike Palatine Club members. Participants and their parents were offered free bike registration with the Village and the ride that followed was super fun for all! View our Facebook photo album.

SAFETY TRAINING ACROSS THE GLOBE, THANKS TO ONE OF OUR CLUB MEMBERS!

PATRICK SMITH

On Children’s Day, November 14, 2015 children from Hyderabad India enjoyed a day of cycling and learning new skills while having fun! In the format of our BikePal Safety Rodeo each spring, parents were eager to have their sons and daughters learn cycling safety. The kids just wanted to ride and have fun and they did, thanks to Patrick Smith, a founding member of the Bike Palatine Club and the treasurer of Ride Illinois, formerly the League of Illinois Bicyclists.

Covering 6 stations in a little over two hours, each station had new challenges and each time the students were up to it. As they moved through the stations, the kids asked questions, and shared their experiences. Parents were thrilled to see their kids practicing skills and doing them successfully by the end of the drill. The kids enjoyed themselves celebrating Children’s Day by having fun and feeling more comfortable on their bikes. They learned about helmet, shoe, clothing safety, rules of the road and more.  India's Hyderabad Bicycling Club plans to sponsor future events in the same format.

SAFE ROUTES TO SCHOOL

In the past, Task force members conducted hands-on bike and pedestrian safety training at area elementary schools as part of our Safe Routes to School initiative. The training included the importance and proper fitting of bike helmets, bike hand signals, safely crossing at a crosswalk (both on foot and on bike), watching for backup lights at driveway crossings, sidewalk crossings of the entrance and exit to parking lots, making eye contact with drivers at other roadway crossings, and other important topics.  Each year, the Palatine Police Department continues to visit most Dist 15 schools to conduct Stranger Danger training with specific bike and pedestrian safety training for Safe Routes to School.
