Cycling to the 9/11 Memorial

Cyclists old enough to recall the planes slamming into the twin towers of New York City's World Trade Center on 9/11 will be surprised to know that a memorial to four of the victims of that tragedy is just a short bike ride away.

The campus of the Zurich American Insurance Company includes a prayerful setting to honor its four employees who died in the towers on 9/11.  A steel remnant of the twin towers, presented to Zurich North America by the New York City Fire Department, sits atop a somber pedestal near a sitting area and garden.  A circular reflecting pool, guarded by a pair of aggressive swans (watch out if you have small children) is nearby.

Bike or pedestrian access to the memorial is via the sidewalk surrounding the pool on the Zurich campus.  To get to the campus, cyclists can pedal on a broad side path in the former Motorola complex on the north and east sides of the curved Progress Parkway.  Riders can also cycle on the narrower sidewalks along the west and south sides of the parkway.  For those cyclists who want to avoid crossing Algonquin Road on the north end or Meacham Road on the east, a parking lot (for Motorola employees) is available inside this complex.

I have cycled there numerous times and am struck by the peaceful sacredness of the space near the memorial.  Weekend traffic is less busy than during the week.  Con-struction crews remaking the complex are also less likely to be throwing up dust and making noise.
