Biking to creekside family picnic

Saturday’s sunny weather was great for a ride. The recent rains had swollen creeks. I put these two together and had a fun adventure with my kids. We packed up the bike trailer, loaded chairs, water, baseball and gloves, and scooters (plus picnic supplies: food, drinks, napkins, and of course wet wipes).

My solo rides take me past spots where I thought a picnic would be nice. This time I went further off the beaten path to scout a day before our picnic. As much as I like a roaring river, or a small creek, my kids don’t have the same passion (yet?).  I made sure we had space to play ball or let them choose their own adventures. I planned in advance for options and choices.

To create your own family or personal adventure, think about places where you can find peace - for you, maybe it’s a meadow, or a wooded area; maybe you like hills, or maybe a flat path; maybe you want people watching (from a distance these days!); maybe you want options for family members to go off for a short while and do their own thing. Think about where and how you want to adventure. Then ride, as a group or solo to scout it out. Places might pick you (all of a sudden you realize - this is the spot!).  Or, you can carefully plan it out if you already have the perfect location in mind.

My Saturday adventure was fortunate to have the recent rain, which made for a more fun creek with rapids, big flows, and a big eddy (all relative, it’s a small creek!). When I rode past the spot on Friday, I knew Saturday would be perfect for this location.

When we arrived, we set up our chairs and ate our lunch. I showed my kids some of the water features and shared my passion for kayaking. After that, the boys explored a little on their bikes, and then they had scooter races a short distance away. I sat by the river and enjoyed the sun, birds, and the flowing water.

Finding and planning adventures for the family can be fun. Have your interests in mind, and think about variety. Pack a lunch, and spend a while. Riding there is half the fun!
